Senior Capstone Project

An interaction of sound and design through the lens of rock and roll music, its evolutionary subgenres, and its influence on culture throughout the 1960s & 70s.

Designing Rock and Roll

  • Digital Photo Collages and Typography Experiments

Rock and roll music was born out of a curiosity to experiment and innovate. In the first part of this project, I closely studied eleven rock and roll songs through typographic experiments, digital photo collages, and triptychs combining type and image that reflected the sound and energy of the genre.

  • Poster-zines: Psychedelic and Blues Influences

Rock and roll profoundly influenced American culture and took part in creating many subgenres and subcultures. The sound was born from a fusion of many genres, such as blues, gospel, jazz, and country. One unique subgenre that evolved from blues and rock and roll music was psychedelic rock. Both genres convey a longing for freedom but are expressed in very different ways.

The poster-zines are foldable posters that capture the essence of psychedelic rock and blues, including information on the genres’ histories and a music playlist.

Part II: Combining Sound, Information, & Design

Poster-zines: Psychedelic and Blues Influences

Rock and roll profoundly influenced American culture and took part in creating many sub-genres and subcultures. One unique sub-genre that evolved from blues and rock and roll music was psychedelic rock. Both genres convey a longing for freedom but are expressed in very different ways.

The poster-zines are foldable 18x24 posters that capture the essence of psychedelic rock and blues, including information on the genres’ histories and a music playlist. Both poster-zine designs were heavily influenced by the explorations from Part I.
